August Recap, September News

What a month this has been for me, in both my personal life and my blogging life. Well, okay, not so much my personal life. Except for the fact that I'm now living in the dorms again, nothing's changed. But this has been a huge month for me in the blogging world!

August accomplishments:
  • I did my very first giveaway! I reached 100 followers at the end of July, so it was a sort of follower appreciation giveaway. I had loads of fun, and it went very smoothly. I will definitely be doing more of these in the future! :)
  • I was interviewed as a blogger! Check out my interview with Jazmen @ This Girl Reads A Lot, who hosts the meme, Blogger Spotlight Sundays. I think this is such a great way to learn more about other bloggers and gain followers.
  • I interviewed an author for the very first time! Well, actually, two authors! I had a lovely chat with C.M. Stunich about her Never Say Never/Never Too Late series (which is one of my favorite series!) for the blog tour. I also had an interview with Joanne Wadsworth, author of the Magio-Earth series. :)
  • I joined Rachel Harris' street team! I'm an official member of the Flirt Squad. :) After I read her book, Taste the Heat, I knew it wouldn't be the last of hers I read. I'm caught up on her books now, and I'm anxiously awaiting the release of book two in the Love & Games series, Seven Day Fiance. And I just love interacting with these awesome people and chatting with one of my favorite authors!
  • I got review requests from authors! So, I think it was in July when I put up my "Contact Me/Review Policy" tab. And when I did, I received a few review requests! But it wasn't until this month when I actually had time to read and review the books from the very first author to email me. These books are fantastic, and I'm so excited to work with this author again in the future! :)
I LOVE being a book blogger! I love to read, review, and recommend good books to people. I love promoting authors and being in the know about new releases. I've found so many amazing books through other bloggers, and I wouldn't change how I've done any of this. Well, okay, I would change one thing. I wish I'd have known about the book blogger world when I first started blogging. I didn't really get into blogging until May, and even then, I was still very new to it all. But since May, I've learned a lot about what goes on in the blogging world. I've learned what being a book blogger is all about. I've learned what to do and what not to do. And I'm excited for all the future possibilities! :)
Belle is totally my favorite Disney character. :)

I just love reading so much, guys. I always have, but being a book blogger has made me love it even more and made me appreciate all the authors who take a chance and publish. It takes infinite courage to follow your dreams, and I applaud each and every one of them for trying. It doesn't matter if they're published the traditional way, or self-published: they're making their dreams come true. They've given me a chance to escape reality so many times over the years. :)

I have read some pretty amazing books this month, and also some pretty disappointing ones. Check out some of my reviews below!
I especially loved My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century and Stay With Me! <3

September News:
Now that I'm back in school, I have no clue how much time I'll have to read and blog. After going through the first week, I'm already overwhelmed. But at least all of my homework is reading. That should be easy, right?! :P Anyway, I'm excited because I'm back with my friends. I'VE MISSED THEM ALL SO MUCH! This year is gonna be fantastic. :)

So, this month I'm not as booked as I was in August. That's a good thing, considering how much I'm already overwhelmed with school! I have a lot of cover reveals going on, and I'm also on three blog tours.
  • September 6th - Heavenly Hell by Aria Williams.
  • September 14th - The Emblazoned Red by Dawn McCullough White.
  • September 28th - The Darkest Part by Trisha Wolfe.
Be on the lookout for my review posts! :)

Tally Time! August's Poll: Do you prefer books in 1st person POV or 3rd person POV?

1st person
/////

3rd person
///

It doesn't matter to me
//////

As long as there are multiple POVs, I don't care
0

I guess it just depends on the reader, the author, the genre. Really, there are a lot of factors. :)

***

Hmm, so September's poll is: Do you like love triangles? Yes or no? Why?

I'm so sick of love triangles. Seriously.
(I feel bad for the next author whose book I read that involves a love triangle--because I'm not going to be very nice about it)
So, I'm steering clear of them for a bit. (Well, that is until I read The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa for a buddy read starting the 8th!).
Honestly, I don't want to read about another one for a long, long time!

***

I really need to stop talking about how much I hate love triangles before it turns into a full-blown rant. So, anyway, there are tons of September releases that I'm looking forward to! And I actually remember all of the ones I want! (Thank you, Goodreads!)
  • All Our Yesterdays (Cassandra Chronicles, #1) by Cristin Terrill. September 3rd. I've been wanting this one ever since I heard of it! It was on NetGalley, but I didn't get approved for a review, which sucks. But, it's coming out very soon! :)
  • Bound by Night (MoonBound Clan Vampire, #1) by Larissa Ione. September 24th. I actually have this one, thanks to NetGalley! I'm really excited to read it, even though I've never read any of her books. But suddenly I'm in the mood for more vampire books, so I'm starting this one soon. :)
  • The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater. September 17th. I haven't read the first book, but I will soon! I need to anyway, because I have Dream Thieves from NetGalley.
  • Awaken (Spiral of Bliss, #3) by Nina Lane. September. That's all it has on Goodreads: August/September. Obviously, it's not out yet. So, I'm crossing my fingers for a September publication! Because... I FUCKING NEED THIS BOOK! I'm not joking; this is one of my all-time favorite series. I just have to know how it all ends! <3 <3 <3
  • The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black. September 3rd. I've already read this, and I LOVED it. It's definitely one of my favorite vampire books. I really wish it wasn't a standalone, because I want more! :(
  • Conversion (Conversion, #1) by S.C. Stephens. September 3rd. So, I tried reading her Thoughtless series. I DNF'd the first book, but someday I'll go back to it. But I still want to try this one! Like I said, I'm in a vampire mood. :)
  • The Transfer: A Divergent Story (Divergent 0.1) by Veronica Roth. September 3rd. Four short stories in Four's POV? I FUCKING CAN'T WAIT FOR THESE! I love Four so much. <3
  • Antigoddess (Goddess War, #1) by Kendare Blake. September 10th. I LOVED Anna Dressed in Blood, so I'm really excited for more from this author. I actually won this in a giveaway from Dark Faerie Tales, and I can't wait to get it! :)
  • Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis. September 24th. I've heard good things about this post-apocalyptic/dystopian novel, and I can't wait to read it!
  • The Chaos of Stars by Kiersten White. September 10th. The cover is gorgeous, and it's got Egyptian Gods in it. I'm sold! :)
Holy hell, that's a lot of books! I knew September had a lot of good books coming out, so I'm really excited to read all of these! :)

One last thing! So, guys. My mom is a self-published author who writes inspirational, historical novels. Her first book, Courage to Hope, is only 99 cents FOR ONE MORE DAY on Amazon! If you like Christian romances, then this book is for you! :)

Also, I have a giveaway going on right now! Joanne Wadsworth, author of the Magio-Earth series, has kindly provided me with two ebook copies of the second book in her series, Warrior, for two lucky winners! This is international! :) So, enter here!

I think that's it, y'all! I'm really excited to be back in school; I just hope I still have lots of time to read and blog. :) And followers, thank you for continuing to put a smile on my face every time you comment on a post of mine. It makes me so happy! It also makes me happy when an author reads my reviews or likes them on Goodreads. I just feel so flattered! It's part of the reason why I'm still blogging. And of course, it's also because I love to read. <3

My Review:

*I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
*Spoilers if you haven’t read the first book!

4.5 stars!

I really loved the first book, Protector, and I was excited to have this one on hand so I could immediately start reading it. At first, I thought that it would continue Faith’s story, but that obviously wasn't the case. Instead, the main character is the twin sister she never knew she had. Hope.

Hope grew up in Dralion with their father, Prince Alexo, but now lives on her country’s station in Australia. She’s different from Faith because she has no strength skills. That they know of.... It isn't until Silas Carver shows up at the station and they find out that they're soul-bound that she finds out she also has the power of mind-merge. The two realize that they won't be able to just walk away from each other, so they go in search of the girls’ ancestors to find a way around the three-day death sentence. Without Faith or their mother knowing who Hope really is.

When Hope finds her great-aunt in the desert of No Man’s Land, she learns about her past and her powers start to show themselves. She has the skill of water manipulation, just like Elizara. And it’s at full strength, unlike with one of her good friends, Maslin. Soon, she'll have her rising and she'll need the people who care the most about her by her side. Goldie, Elizara, Maslin, Alexo. And thanks to a chance meeting with her sister, Hope will have Faith to help her through this time.

And she also has Silas. Because although Silas accepted the bond because she would die without merging her mind with his, he’s fallen in love with the enemy. And it doesn't matter that they now have a way around that, he’s not letting her out of his life. No matter how many times she pushes him to move on. Her grandfather, the ruthless leader of Dralion, still has no idea that his granddaughters are soul-bound with two Peacians. But Alexo will never make his girls give up their men, and he’s been keeping his father in the dark ever since he took Faith and her mother back to their country.

Like soul-bonds, blood-bonds are just as special and powerful. When Hope meets her great-aunt, her sister, and her mother, she instantly develops a strong familial love for them. Besides the soul-bonds, the family aspect to this series is my favorite part of the books. They take care of their own, and they are stronger together. It was beautiful when the family of four was reunited with each other. <3

I loved Silas in Protector, even when he was being a jerk. I was excited to see this hot-tempered, hard-headed protector fall in love, especially with the stubborn and argumentative Hope. Now he knows exactly what his cousin, Davio, was going through with being soul-bound to Faith. The girls aren't just regular Dralions, they are Wincrests, heirs to the throne and sworn enemies of their men’s family. These characters have a bumpy road ahead of them, and I'm sure more obstacles will be thrown their way. But I have hope that we will see the two countries of Magio, Dralion and Peacio, unite in the future. That they will no longer be enemies. And the power to do that will come from the youngest in the families and the soul-bonds that they have with each other.

Excerpt
Silas extinguished the lamp, and moonlight filtered through the tiny square window. He rolled to his side, facing me. “We’ll stay close. I can’t dismiss the mated bond. Our souls call to one another and it’s strong.”
I felt it too.
“I can’t keep my distance from you, Hope. That would result in your death.”
“Yeah, but yours would result if my grandfather, Donaldo, ever found out about you. The need to protect goes both ways.”
A low growl rumbled from his throat. “It sounds like you’re arguing with me.”
“I’m pointing out the facts. Alexo keeps the knowledge of Faith’s relationship with Loveria a secret.”
“We don’t have their kind of relationship.”
“So this is a non-relationship?” I smiled. That actually suited me.
“Yes.”
“Okay, honey. I got it.”
He pulled me to him. “I have no idea why, but I like you. You have a smart mouth.”
I snuggled closer, resting my cheek against his chest. “Mmm-hmm. So do you.”
He let out a slow breath and it fanned over the top of my head. “I still want to kiss you.”
“Hell, no.” I grinned to myself.
“Are you repeating my earlier words?”
“Yes, I am.” He rolled me, coming up over top. My heart raced. “Don’t--”
His kiss was potent as he claimed my mouth.
I had no response. I was lost, hypnotized as we shared breath and a moment more special than any in time.
He cupped my face in his hands and stroked my cheeks, his thoughts escaping for the first time.
I read them so clearly within the merge.
He wanted this moment to last.
My heart soared and my soul called to his on the deepest level. “We are in a world of trouble,” I murmured against his lips.
His hold tightened, intoxicating me. Then he eased away an inch, maybe two. “You have the most beautiful spun-gold hair. It catches even the moonlight and glows like silk.”
I cleared my throat. “I know I just said trouble. You should stick to your side of the bed in this non-relationship.”
A wicked grin widened his mouth. “I could drown in the brilliant violet of your eyes.”
“Do I need to slap your face?”
He laughed. “Yes.”
I pushed him away, trying to get my heartbeat to slow. “Go away.”
He rolled into me, held me close. “I’ll be good. Just keeping you warm. It’s my right.”
I curled up, squeezing my eyes shut. “I can’t believe I’m sharing a bed with you. Do you snore?”
“Terribly. I’m also a bed-hog.”
I heard the partial lie, but to which half of that statement? “Hmm, since I’m squished between you and the wall, I’m picking you’re a bed-hog.”
“You feel all warm and soft. I’m not going anywhere.” He nuzzled my hair and yawned. “Go to sleep. You’ll need your rest if you want to be on your toes tomorrow.”

I didn’t doubt it. The minutes ticked by, and I slowly relaxed. My soul-bound mate lay beside me. For one night, or perhaps for more? I had no idea.

Swoon Thursday #13

Swoon Thursday is a weekly event hosted by YA Bound. From the book you're currently reading, or one you just finished, tell us what made you swoon. :) Shout it out on Twitter with the hashtag #YABound, post it here in the comments, or grab the button below and share it on your blog.

This week I was swooning over Stay With Me (With Me, #1) by Elyssa Patrick. <3

His mouth finally touches mine, but it's not a kiss that claims or declares intent.
He gives.
His lips give kisses upon mine, like rain watering parched land. His mouth moves against mine, gentle, strong, and it makes me cling to him, to give more to him, to open up in ways I never have with any man before.
His teeth catch on my lower lip, lightly tugging, as if asking a question, one that I answer by opening my mouth and letting him in. His tongue glides against me, tasting, seeking. He's all I know, all I want to know, and I want him to know me in every possible way.

Review of Stay With Me by Elyssa Patrick

*I received a copy of this from NetGalley and Elyssa Patrick in exchange for a honest review!

4.5 Heartwarming, Electric Stars!

As soon as I saw this one, I had to have it. I was sucked in by that gorgeous cover and the synopsis. And when I found it on NetGalley, I knew I had to request it. When I was approved to do the review, I was so excited! I had other books to read, but I just couldn't wait, so I started reading. And I. Couldn't. Stop. It was that good. It was like someone had thrown a lasso around me; I was roped into the story, and it had me wrapped up so tight, that by the end, I was having difficulty removing myself from the grasp the book had on me. Stay With Me now has a permanent spot on my favorites shelf.

***

Stay With Me was a heartwarming, electric story, filled with a sweet romance, amazing characters, and undeniably strong ties of love, family, and friendship.
I love you may be only 3 words... three syllables, but those three words are the most powerful, precious ones in the world. And the most freeing.
Love, just love. <3

As much as the romance is an integral part of Stay With Me, I still think the most rewarding part of this story was the main character, Hailey, finding who she is and letting go of her past so she could move on to her bright future. This is sort of your typical girl meets boy story, except girl is a famous celebrity who has no privacy. And she wants out of that life. Hailey has grown up resenting her status and resenting her mother for pushing her to do things she didn't want to do. So, Hailey packs up her bags, changes her phone number, and moves to Vermont to attend Green College. All she wants is to figure out who she is and what she wants to do with her life.
"I believe that when passion is ingrained in you, imprinted on your soul, and it's everything you are, even when it's not fun, it's worth it. Because the other option, the one where you don't do what you love will kill you."
She wants to be more than The Hailey Bloom, singer, actress, dancer. She wants a normal and quiet life, away from the prying eyes of paparazzi and away from her mother's demands. She doesn't count on two things: how hard school is and meeting Caleb Fox.

Ohhhh, Caleb Fox. *swoons* Seriously, he's amazing. He's funny, kind, and has a good heart. He sees the real Hailey, the one she's hidden deep down inside herself. He's down-to-earth, loving, and has a protective instinct for the women in his life. And he's got a dog! *melts in a puddle* :) Their relationship started with sharing a deck and a jacket and it turned into something passionate and explosive and oh, so real.

The connection between them is instant, yet Hailey has been screwed over in the past by boyfriends selling her secrets and her sex life to the tabloids. It's hard to trust anyone, let alone a guy who makes her question her decision to stick to only school for the next year. Somehow, though, he manages to break down her walls and worm his way into her life. And her heart.
Two heartbeats, two hearts, but there's something here—something I can't name yet. It almost feels like there's this thread, this oh so delicate thread connecting us. That with each moment, with each shared heartbeat, with each barrier we break down, this thread will only grow stronger, firmer, and never break.
I loved the slow build-up of their relationship, and the way they interacted as a couple. All those challenges and bets were amusing to read about. Their conversations and the way they were as a couple just felt so real. There was absolutely no drama between them, and I LOVED it. The no drama didn't actually bug me, even though it totally could have made this story really boring. There were some obstacles standing in the way of their happiness, but nothing they couldn't overcome.

That secret, though, I thought it would create some drama. Maybe I've just been reading about too many drama-filled relationships that I couldn't appreciate the love and tenderness that Caleb and Hailey show each other. I guess I wanted a little drama, although I'm glad Hailey's "big secret" didn't change anything in their relationship. But, honestly, the only reason this is getting 4.5 stars and not 5 is because I figured out her secret. It was too easy for me, and when it came up, I was like: So yeah, that happened. I knew Caleb would be understanding, but I figured Hailey would push him away and slam the door on their relationship. And I think that's why I loved this book so much; it didn't do what I expected. But still, the "big secret" was kind of smoothed over.

These two characters were the ones I love to cheer for, the ones who make me smile and make me appreciate the strong relationship they have with each other.

***

Like I said, not only did I love Caleb and Hailey, but I loved the secondary characters! Nick, Daphne, Jamie, Griff. Caleb's sisters and parents. They were all such an integral part of the story and a big part of Caleb's and Hailey's relationship. Daphne was the kind of best friend you want in your life. Nick was this mysterious enigma, and I just wanted to unravel him. Jamie was hilarious; he brought a comical aspect to the book. Griff was this soft-spoken, quiet, and reserved individual who has infinite wisdom. Even Caleb's sisters and his family's interactions with each other were endearing. I want more of these characters, and I want to know their stories.

Guys, it's a standalone! A STANDALONE. I didn't know it at first, but once I met the other characters besides the two lovebirds, I had to check. I just had to know if the series was going to continue with the two main characters, or if it would be someone else's story. So, before I read any further, I checked the second book in the series to see what the story was about (I'm a masochist; I really love to torture myself). And thank God it said Nick Brady's story. I don't know what I would have done had my high hopes been disappointed. Not that I don't love the two main characters, mind you! I just love ALL of the characters, and I wanted to know more about every single one of them.

And I can't fucking wait to read Nick Brady's book.

Waiting on Wednesday #12

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm super excited to post about Into the Still Blue! I've been waiting for the blurb!
Expected publication date: January 28th, 2014.

The earth-shattering conclusion to Veronica Rossi's "masterpiece" Under the Never Sky trilogy and sequel to the New York Timesbestselling Through the Ever Night (Examiner.com).

Their love and their leadership have been tested. Now it's time for Perry and Aria to unite the Dwellers and the Outsiders in one last desperate attempt to bring balance to their world.

The race to the Still Blue has reached a stalemate. Aria and Perry are determined to find this last safe-haven from the Aether storms before Sable and Hess do-and they are just as determined to stay together.

Meanwhile, time is running out to rescue Cinder, who was abducted by Hess and Sable for his unique abilities. And when Roar returns to camp, he is so furious with Perry that he won't even look at him, and Perry begins to feel like they have already lost.

Out of options, Perry and Aria assemble a team to mount an impossible rescue mission-because Cinder isn't just the key to unlocking the Still Blue and their only hope for survival, he's also their friend. And in a dying world, the bonds between people are what matter most.

In this final book in her stunning Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi raises the stakes to their absolute limit and brings her epic love story to an unforgettable close.

***

Why am I waiting for this book?

Guys, this series is one of my favorites. EVER. I fucking love this story, Aria's and Perry's relationship, and even all of the secondary characters like Roar and Cinder. I can't even... GOD, I CAN'T STAND THE WAIT! I NEED IT NOW!

So, what book are you dying to get your hands on? Leave me a comment with your WOW link so I can check it out! :)

Her father disapproves of her decision to run her grandma’s ranch instead of focusing solely on learning the family business; Animal Control brings her Argus, a mistreated horse that she can't turn away even though she's not ready for another horse; and her boyfriend, Eric Bennett, a world famous polo player, becomes possessive and authoritarian. Despite her best efforts to disguise it, Hannah grows wary of him.

Then, Leonardo Fernandes struts onto the polo scene. A cocky rookie with a messy life of his own, he’s drawn to Hannah and isn’t afraid of showing it, even when Eric makes it clear she is his and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep it that way. Hannah suffers for Eric’s jealousy. The abuse only gets worse when Leo steals the title of best polo player in the world from Eric.

But the title isn’t enough for Leo. He wants Hannah too, and she can’t deny her attraction to him either. Somehow, she must find a way to break free from abusive Eric before he breaks every bone in her body.

Excerpt #2:

I stepped toward the big French doors when I heard a shout and stopped. I looked around, trying to find the source, but didn't see anyone. Letting my curiosity win, I descended the porch steps and followed the short stone path around a tall wall. Perhaps I shouldn't spy, but I was concerned it could be someone who’d been riding and fell or something.
What I didn't expect was to find Leo arguing with his father. In Portuguese.
I should have left. I should have retreated, pretended I never saw anything, and went back inside the main house and back to my mother and her friends.
But I caught a few words and sentences whispered in fast, harsh tones. Disappointment. Make me proud. Grow up. Work hard and stop playing.
My curiosity piqued, making me stay glued to my spot in the corner.
“Me deixa em paz, tche!” Leo shouted, turning his back to his father and stalking away.
I stepped back and hid behind the wall, hoping for all that was holy that he hadn't seen me. My hopes went down the drain when he stepped around the corner three seconds later, his hard eyes on mine.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I didn't mean to.”
His jaw tightened, and he crossed his arms over his blue T-shirt. The color emphasized his bright eyes, and the fabric clung to him, especially over his stomach, where a dark blotch of sweat showed off his hard abs. His goddamn white practice pants and the sweat-damp hair didn't help either.
“How much did you hear?” he asked.
I swallowed, forcing my mind to push back images of his god-like body. “Not much. But I only understood a couple of words here and there.” I shifted my weight, uncomfortable under his gaze, not only because I’d seen and heard something I wasn't supposed to. Keep your mouth shut, Hannah. Keep your damned mouth sh… “Want to talk about it?”
The shine in his eyes changed, and the tension in his neck seemed to lessen. He shook his head. “Don’t worry. It’s just the usual banter.”
Usual? I didn't like the sound of that. His family seemed so perfect, so warm, so close, so happy. His sister had said he rarely smiled, which seemed odd since I had seen him smiling before. I was dying to know why he and his father usually argued.
Instead, I started a new subject. “I heard you’re staying.”
He nodded. “It was the plan all along.”
“Really?”
“Sim. Polo in Brazil isn't that strong. Here, though, is another story.”
“I see.” I looked from side to side. “Do you and your brothers plan on staying for … long?” I pressed my lips together, chiding myself for almost saying forever.
“We don’t know. Perhaps, if all goes well.” He took a step closer, his eyes still on mine, making me slightly breathless. His body loomed closer, the difference in our heights and widths almost hilarious, if it wasn't for the fact it turned me on. Crap. “I hope we do.” A shiver rolled down my spine.
