Excerpt:
Prologue
Some people wear their hearts on their sleeves.  I learned a long time ago that preserving one’s heart means keeping it protected.  Sheltered.  My heart is hidden deep within the secure layers of my soul, where it rests easy with the knowledge that nothing can penetrate its everlasting impervious shell.
Twelve Years Ago
Yelling.  Always yelling.  The hardwood floor in my bedroom chilled my toes as I slid out of my bed to see what was going on.  I wouldn’t dare leave my room, though.  I knew better.  As I tip-toed to the bright crack in the door, something crashed to pieces, and I squeezed Mama Bear tight.
Is Mommy crying?
My hand found a place on the cool metal door knob as I peeked through the crack.  I brought Mama Bear up to my chin so she could see too.  Her soft, fuzzy fur tickled me.  Mommy sat on the floor with her back against the hallway wall, her head in her hands while Daddy stood tall above her.  Her shoulders lifted up and down as she wept.
No, Mommy, don’t cry!
“I want a divorce,” she whispered.
What was a divorce?  Whatever it was, Daddy didn’t seem too happy about it.  He crouched down so that his eyes were across from hers.  Fisting her t-shirt, he yanked her close to him.  With the other hand, he pointed his finger at her, jabbing her as he spoke.  His voice stayed quiet, and I couldn’t hear what he said, but I knew it was something scary.
The door knob made a noise as I accidentally let go of it, and both of their heads turned to look at me.  My eyes widened, and I gasped.  I ran back to bed as fast as I could, quickly covering myself in my blankie.  Oh no, I dropped Mama Bear!  My door creaked as it opened, and light came through the seams of my blankie.
“Olivia?” Daddy said softly.
I didn’t answer.  Mommy was always telling me to make smart choices.  I chose to stay perfectly still and not to breathe too loudly, but it wasn’t easy because my heart was pounding hard.  It was a smart choice, though, because after a few seconds, the door creaked closed. I was safe.  Mommy would be very proud of me.
I peered at the floor, searching for Mama Bear, but she was nowhere to be seen.  Daddy must’ve taken her.  Who’s gonna sleep with me?  I pulled my knees to my chest and held onto them tightly.  Mommy says I’m brave.  Brave girls don’t need silly toys.  Brave girls sleep by themselves.
Eight Years Ago
It’s been a year since Dad told me I wouldn’t be able to spend time at his house anymore.  He said he was leaving to get a new start.  At first, his emails came daily and postcards came weekly, but I haven’t gotten either for at least a month.  Mom says he’s moved on, with his new wife and baby, and that it’s the best thing for all of us.
I was glad to have Kevin.  He loved me and Mom.  Happiness didn’t even begin to describe how I felt when Mom told me he was moving in with us.  If he lived with us, it would mean I would get to see magic tricks and laugh at his stories every day.
Mom told me about the accident last week.  Kevin had gotten hit by a drunk driver.  I knew something was wrong when she dropped the phone on the floor and began sobbing.  I had seen her cry before—but never like that.
I stayed with Nana for five days after that call, and when I returned home, Mom took me into my room, sat me down on my bed, and broke the news.  The funeral service had been the prior day.  Mom thought it would be best if I didn’t attend because it would be too difficult for me.  I cried myself to sleep that night.  I couldn’t get the thought of Kevin, being buried deep in the ground, out of my mind.
The next morning, I thought a lot about the way things work, and I figured out that nothing’s forever.  Nothing.  I had to be strong.  Brave.  I hated being sad.  I hated crying.  I vowed to find a way to make sure I never felt this horrendous feeling ever again.
Three Years Ago
I looked around our heated garage as Adam poured the amber liquid into our little glasses.   All the tool chests and auto supplies had been packed up and hauled out.  He filled his glass to the brim while mine was only filled a quarter of the way.  He said I couldn’t have a full glass because I was only fourteen.
Hanging out with Adam came naturally.  It was easy.  He was much younger than Mom, but I was under the misguided impression that they were in love, regardless of his age.
Normally, the whiskey we shared was in celebration of an accomplishment.  A new paint job, installing the new engine, fixing the interior.  I had spent most of my evenings and weekends for the last three years watching Adam restore his 1968 Pontiac GTO.  He bragged to people about how much I helped him, but really, I just watched him work and handed him tools as we talked.
Today, we toasted goodbye.  It would be the last time I’d ever see him.  My throat burned as the liquor flowed down it, but I welcomed the feeling.  It reminded me of good times.
“I’m gonna miss you, Sweetie,” he said with tears in his eyes.  “I asked her to marry me, you know.  She said no.”
Anger quickly flooded my system, washing away the heartbreak.  How could she say no?  It had taken me over two years to let my guard down around him.  Two years to break the vow that I had kept for so long and let myself feel again.  She was making him go away.  This was her fault.
I watched as Adam rolled his refurbished car down the driveway and out of my life.  Without thought, my body stormed into the house in search of my mother.  I found her staring blankly out the living room window.
“How could you say no?” I screamed.
“Livie, what are you talking about?”
“He told me, Mom!  He told me he asked you to marry him!”
Her shoulders sunk as she let out a breath.  Her expression turned angry.  “Did he tell you he was seeing another woman?  Did he tell you that he asked me to marry him only after I found out?”
My heart stopped.  My mind barely comprehended what my mother had just told me.  It couldn’t be true.  Adam loved us.  With regret in her eyes, she rushed toward me with open arms.
“No.”  I held out my hand.  “NO!”  Tears spilled out of my eyes as I ran to my bedroom, locked my door, and flopped belly down onto my bed, sobbing uncontrollably into my pillow.
Why does everyone I love have to leave?
Never again.  I’m done.  This is the last time I will ever have this feeling.

Release Day Launch and Review: White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Synopsis:
One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

My Review!

*I received a copy of this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

You should know that this is the third book I've tried to read by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I've tried Obsidian and Wait for You, but I couldn't finish them. Maybe it was the books, her writing, or maybe it was just because of my reading state at the time. Whatever it was, I was a little hesitant going into this one. But I'd been wanting to read White Hot Kiss ever since I heard of the blurb. C'mon, gargoyles? I had to find out what this was all about!

Rating: 4 stars!

And, it turns out, I loved this book! I was immediately hooked from the beginning. The main character's voice was easy to connect with, and I really liked her. Layla is a half-gargoyle, half-demon young woman living with the Wardens. They've adopted her, treating her like their own. But she's not just a gargoyle. She has demon blood in her, something that she can't come to terms with, something she's been told to suppress. Layla just wants to be normal, to be able to shift, to kiss her crush without stealing his soul. Sometimes, she can be pretty stupid, and naive. I did so many face-palms when she talked. However, I thought her innocence and her character was very endearing. She has a likable personality, and she's just trying to understand her past and who she is. And it's a past that will come back to haunt her and make her question everything.

THE LOVE TRIANGLE
Okay, so if you've read any of my reviews, you'd know that I HATE love triangles. I can't stand them, and I was honestly so worried about this one. It sounds like your average, typical love triangle with the best friend, the MC's crush, someone she can't have, and the sarcastic bad boy who makes her blood boil. I was ready to hate this love triangle. And even though it's a typical trope, I didn't mind it in White Hot Kiss. I ended up really liking Zayne, the totally off-limits hottie. However, I sometimes hated how he treated Layla like a child, like she couldn't do anything besides tag demons. He's protective, I get that. But she needed room to grow, and he was stifling her. And I think that they are better off as friends, but because of everything happening in this book, I was saddened that their relationship sort of tapered off. I want more of their interactions; I missed them after reading Bitter Sweet Love!

And that brings me to Roth. Ooh, I have a thing for fictional bad boys, and Roth was no different. I loved him! He's such a three-dimensional character, and I want to learn more about him in book two, and I have to know if he's okay after that ending! He made me swoon, made me laugh, made me absolutely adore him. He's this badass demon who has a trademark smirk and a dirty comment for everything. Sounds typical, right? I thought so, too. But I really loved how he was more than that, more than just a demon. It's too bad he doesn't make it easy for anyone to trust him, and I was nervous, wondering if he had ulterior motives. But he completely surprised me, and I loved that!

THE PLOT
Like I said, I was pulled in from the beginning. I read Bitter Sweet Love first, but I still wasn't convinced of this series. But I loved the paranormal aspects! It was different, unique, and the idea of these "gargoyles" being real and being protectors was awesome. And I'm glad that the plot was about 50/50 when it came to the romance and paranormal aspects. The romance, and the love triangle, didn't dominate the story-line, and for that I was grateful. I also thought the action scenes were well-done, and the characters were all kickass. I liked where the story-line headed, and I can't wait to see what JLA does in book two, Stone Cold Touch. I'm hoping for more swoons, more action, and more Roth. ;)

This has a cliffhanger, and boy, does it make me want that second book right this minute. I have to know what happens now. I have to see where Jennifer Armentrout takes this series. But more than that, I want to. I want more of these characters, and I want more of this paranormal world.

In-between total swoon-worthy scenes, the characters throw out awesome one-liners, and the suspense and danger is never far from their thoughts. They each held their own weight, and the main character's voice was refreshing in its innocence and curiosity about her identity. White Hot Kiss had everything--a little bit of romance, a little bit of action, and a whole lot of humor. :)

EXCERPT:

“I don’t think of Zayne that way!”
She laughed. “What man-parts-loving female in this world doesn’t think of Zayne that
way? I can barely keep myself breathing when I see him. All the guys in school have squishy
waists. I can tell Zayne doesn’t. He’s the awesome sauce with extra sauce.”
That he was and he so didn’t have a squishy waist, but I tuned Stacey out at that point. I
really did need to cram for this test and I also didn’t want my fantasies involving Zayne to
occupy my mind right now. Especially after I’d woken up this morning, carefully tucked under
the covers. The bed had smelled like him: sandalwood and crisp linen.
“Oh, sweet baby Jesus in a manger,” Stacey murmured.
I clenched my jaw, cupping my hands over my ears.
She jabbed me in the side with her elbow. At this rate I’d be covered in bruises before
lunchtime. “Our bio class just got a billion times more interesting. And hotter, lots and lots
hotter. Holy mother, I want to have his babies. Not now of course, but definitely later. But I’d
like to start practicing soon.”
The cell wall is a thick and rigid layer covering the plasma something, something plant
cells…
Stacey stiffened all of a sudden. “Oh my God, he’s coming—”
              Composed of fat and sugar—
Something slender and shiny fell from who knew where, landing in the middle of Sam’s
notes. Blinking tightly, it took me a couple of seconds to recognize the faded and half peeled
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sticker covering the back of the silver cell phone.
My heart slammed against my ribs. Gripping the edges of the notebook, I slowly lifted
my gaze. Unnaturally beautiful golden eyes met mine.
“You forgot this last night.”

His boxes are packed and he’s got one foot out the door when a phone call changes everything.

My Review!

I think Tricks may be my favorite standalone of this series! I absolutely loved the characters, and it was the perfect mix of suspense and romance. I adored Charlotte, and Tucker had me swooning with his bad boy charm and genuinely funny POV. This is one romantic mystery that you don't want to miss!

Rating: 4.5 stars!

I love how Cambria Hebert uses double POVs to tell the story, because it's so nice having both of the main characters' thoughts and feelings. Also, I totally loved their POVs and personalities.

Charlotte is a no-nonsense lawyer who doesn't know how to let her hair down. She's pretty much stuck in a rut with her life; her job takes a lot out of her, and she's slipped into a comfortable relationship with her boyfriend, Max. But there's a spark within her, and it takes one leather-jacket wearing soldier to unleash her inner wild.

Tucker was all set on moving to North Carolina when the Feds show up at his door to tell him that his brother is dead. They want him to finish the job, and Tucker is all too happy to comply. He wants revenge; he wants justice done to the men who killed his twin brother. But revenge and rage are not the only emotions consuming this man. There's also grief, and pain, and an all-encompassing desire for the pretty lawyer he finds in his brother's home.

I think the characters, and their relationship with each other, was my favorite part of this story. I loved how the author developed their relationship. At first, Charlotte is unaware of Max being dead and that the man standing before her is, in fact, his twin brother. A brother she's never met. I'm glad Cambria didn't draw out that aspect of it; she timed the plot point where Charlotte finds out that Max is really dead and that the guy before her is Tucker perfectly. It fit into the story-line, and after that, their relationship feels more genuine (not that it wasn't before, but there was that whole secrecy on Tucker's part). Even though this was fast-paced, I thought that the feelings that developed between them were real and raw.

Grief is raw. Honest. Intense. I really loved how the author drew from Tucker's and Charlotte's grief to make them seem more real. To make their feelings more heartfelt. I know that Cambria was worried about how people would feel when Tucker and Charlotte have sex after Charlotte learns that Max is dead. (See, Cambria, I DO read your acknowledgments! :) But, to me? I thought it fit the story-line. And I also know that, while Charlotte felt incredibly guilty, it's natural to seek out companionship when grieving. It's natural to look for life. I loved how the author showed that side to the characters, the part where they just give into their desires without thought, without reason. It was raw. It was honest. It was real.

Like I said, the plot was fast-paced. It was a mix of suspense, romance, cute moments, and heart-stopping action. It was the perfect blend of thriller and contemporary, just how I like them.

This series just keeps getting better and better. And Tricks is, by far, my favorite. :) I can't wait to see what else Cambria has up her sleeve with Tattoo!!!
