2016 End of Year Survey

I LOVE doing this survey at the end of the year, hosted by lovely Jamie from The Perpetual Page-Turner. I always love showcasing ALL THE BOOKS and talking about my faves. And here is my year in books!

2016 Reading Stats
Number Of Books You Read: 160 (or it will be when I've finished Prisoner of Azkaban :D)
Number of Re-Reads: 19!
Genre You Read The Most From: fantasy and contemporary

1. Best Book You Read?
Froi of the Exiles by Melina Marchetta. Hands down. I even read this TWICE, and it was still the best book I read all year. Forever faaaave.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?
Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst and Beast by Brie Spangler. OFAS was honestly the most disappointing 2016 release of all. And I wanted to love them both SO badly. But I didn't like the MC in Beast, and OFAS was just… not good. :(

3. Most Surprising (in a good way or bad way) Book?
Iron Cast by Destiny Soria
Some Kind of Happiness by Claire Legrand
Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roehrig

All good surprises! I had no expectations going in for any of the three, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved them all.

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?
Addicted to You by Krista and Becca Ritchie, I guess? I don't think many people read it (yet), but they DID add it to their TBRs/buy the book because of me. The Addicted series is one of the best EVER, and I want more people to read it!

5. Best Series You Started? Best Seque? Best Series Ender?
Best Series Starter: The Falconer by Elizabeth May

Best Sequel: A Gathering of Shadows (Victoria Schwab) and The Long Game (Jennifer Lynn Barnes) and The Vanishing Throne (Elizabeth May)

Best Series Ender: The Beauty of Darkness (Mary E. Pearson) and The Rose and the Dagger (Renee Ahdieh) and Crooked Kingdom (Leigh Bardugo).

6. Favorite New Authors You Discovered?
Claire Legrand, Tessa Dare, Elizabeth May, Stacey Lee, and Anna-Marie McLemore.

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?
Quiet by Susan Cain. This is nonfiction, which I don’t ever read. But I’m glad I DID read it because I’ve never felt more understood as a person.

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson. I also don’t read graphic novels, and while I did like the unusual style, I’m not sure it’s for me. (Though I do really want to try Monstress).

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?
Gemina by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman. Seriously so engrossing I read 600 pages in less time than I would have another book that size.

Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. SO unputdownable.

9. Book You Read In 2016 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?
Jellicoe Road, because my mission in life is to know all the Marchetta books by heart.

10. Favorite Covers?

11. Most memorable character of 2016?
Kaz Brekker - whoops? :D (I feel like I'm cheating because SoC came out in 2015, but whatever)

But also the cast of the Addicted series. MY PRECIOUSES.

omg I'm forgetting Aithinne from The Vanishing Throne. LOVE HER.

12. Most Beautifully Written Book Read?
The Bird and the Sword by Amy Harmon
The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi
When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore

Each of these authors had such a lovely style of writing. Roshani’s gorgeous, enchanting words. Anna-Marie’s lyrical prose. Amy’s wonderful story.

13. Most Thought-Provoking/Life-Changing Book?
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. So relatable and personal for me, and something that really hit a part of my heart that I’ve locked up tight. I needed this book in my life something fierce.

Quiet made me feel like, for the first time, that being an introvert wasn’t a bad thing.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2016 to finally read?
Froi of the Exiles! omg how could I have ever waited

15. Favorite Passage/Quote?
"Then I choose to drown. In hope. Rather than float into nothing." -Finnikin of the Rock

"Our bodies aren't strangers. Our spirits aren't strangers. Tell me what part of me is stranger to you, and I'll destroy that part of me." -Froi of the Exiles
(really SO many quotes from the Lumatere Chronicles are my faves)

"I will accept any amount of monsters my mind wants to give me, but I will not become a monster myself." -Winter

"How do I know I love her? Because I can sleep after I talk to her." -Gansey, The Raven King

"We are like rubber bands at rest. We are elastic and can stretch ourselves, but only so much." -Quiet

"Everyone has that moment, I think, the moment when something so... momentous happens that it rips your very being into small pieces. And then you have to stop. For a long time, you gather your pieces. And it takes such a very long time, not to fit them back together, but to assemble them in a new way, not necessarily a better way. More, a way you can live with until you know for certain that this piece should go there, and that one there." -Girl in Pieces

"I know your soul. Everything else is an ornament." -The Star-Touched Queen

"I would come for you. I would come for you. And if I couldn't walk, I'd crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we'd fight our way out together - knives drawn, guns blazing. Because that's what we do. We never stop fighting." -Crooked Kingdom

"You'll be okay. You won't see it today, maybe not even tomorrow, but one day, you'll wake up and you'll want to live." -Some Kind of Perfect

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read?
Shortest: 300 Fox Way Holiday piece, at 2 pages
Longest: Winter with 832 pages

17. Book That Shocked You The Most
The Long Game. That FUCKER.
The Darkest Corners by Kara Thomas. what the fuuuuuuuuuuuuck was that ending

Kaz and Inej - again, it feels like a cheat because of Crooked Kingdom being a sequel, but I don't even care. IT'S MY ONE TRUE SHIP OF THE YEAR HONESTLY.

Okay wait, I do adore Kiaran and Aileana from The Falconer a whole fucking lot. BABIES.

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year
Corinne and Ada from Iron Cast
Sloane and co from This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills
And the OT5, of course.

20. Favorite Book You Read From An Author You’ve Read Previously
The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis
Punk 57 by Penelope Douglas
Bad Boy by Elliot Wake
P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

Yeah, I couldn’t really choose only one here, and I wanted to showcase all four of these awesome books at least once!

21. Best Book You Read That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure?
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. I don't know if it would've gotten on my radar or if I'd have read it if it wasn't for the hype and the pressure of so many people saying OMG GO READ IT. And I'm so glad I did, because it is amazing.

22. Newest Fictional Crush?
Connor fucking Cobalt from the Addicted series. BE STILL MY BEATING HEART.

23. Best 2016 Debut?
The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi and Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow. Both of them were so amazing!

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting?
Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi and Heartless by Marissa Meyer. I could picture these fantastical worlds so clearly in my mind!

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?
A Scot Ties the Knot - as it was my first Tessa Dare, I have such love for it. But ALL her books are so fun to read. And they've come to be comfort reads for me.

Also, the Lynburn Legacy series had me cackling aloud A LOT. (But I didn't choose it first here bc the romantic angst nearly killed my joy).

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2016?
You Were Here by Cori McCarthy. I could relate so well to Jaycee and how she dealt with her grief was not unlike myself, in a few ways.

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year?
You Were Here by Cori McCarthy
Ripple by Heather Smith Meloche
The Forgetting by Sharon Cameron

These books flew pretty under-the-radar, especially the first two, so I definitely wanted to talk about them. And y’all need to check them out! They’re all SO good, and such gems honestly.

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul?
A Monster Calls - need I say more?
A Gathering of Shadows by Victoria Schwab. I don’t know how I’m gonna survive the ending.

29. Most Unique Book?
The Reader by Traci Chee. The style and the way it was narrated, and the stories within the story all made this such a unique read. I can’t freaking wait for the sequel!

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad?
Untold by Sarah Rees Brennan. Like I said in a question above, the romantic angst did nooooot make me happy. There were points when I had to put the book down and walk away bc I was over it all and I almost didn't finish the series.

The Long Game. Yo, THAT WAS NOT COOL JENNIFER. TAKE IT BACK. (Still loved the book but omgggg)

1. New Favorite Book Blog You Discovered?
Aentee from Read at Midnight. I adore her and her blog, and I think she's so damn creative! I'm so happy I'm following her now. <3

2. Favorite Review That You Wrote?
The ones for the series enders like The Beauty of Darkness and Crooked Kingdom. Those are always such fun to write!

3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog?
My post all about the book, Quiet, and being an introvert. Also the one where I sorted The 100 characters into the Hogwarts Houses!

4. Best Event That You Participated In?
BEA 2016, for sure! It was worth it, so worth it.

5. Best Moment of Bookish/Blogging Life?
Being quoted by The Novl, getting added to Macmillan’s mailing list, being invited to Mac’s Happy Hour blogger party during BEA 2016, soooo many!

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year?
Finding the time and motivation to comment! Especially now that I’m working again, it’s been a lot harder to get back into this. But I’m so determined to make it work and interact on blogs better in 2017!

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog?
Based on views alone, my thoughts on the Vampire Academy series! People really love those books. Haha.

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love?
Any of the ones during the Shattering Stigmas event! I adored hosting and having people guest post on the blog, and I wish some of them had gotten a bit more love for sharing their words. :)

9. Best Bookish Discovery?
Subscription boxes! I had definitely heard of a few back in 2015, I think, but I hadn’t really paid attention until this past summer. My favorites have been OwlCrate and The Bookish Box so far. They're just so much fun!

10. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?
I diiiiid! My Goodreads goal was 100, and I hit that back in July. I also did quite a few other reading challenges. I read a series a month the whole year, and I completed the Pokemon Indigo readathon back in August-September. And I did fill out a bingo card at least once in Bookish Bingo. :D

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2016 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2017?
My Lady Jane!

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating for 2017 (non-debut)?
Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor! omg it’s been so long since I’ve read one of her books, and I am in neeeeed.

3. 2017 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?
Soooo many! The Hate U Give, The Gauntlet, Daughter of the Pirate King, When Dimple Met Rishi, and You’re Welcome, Universe are the big ones!

4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2017?
Series Ender: A Conjuring of Light
Sequel: Wayfarer

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2017?
I'm not really sure? I'd just really like to settle more into the mindset that this is my blog, so I choose what content I post. I started to do that in 2016, but I still focus more on what I feel like I should be writing about based on on other blogs and such, and it's not great. So yeah, I'd like to branch out a bit more from just book talk.

6. A 2017 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend to Everyone?
Caraval! That is seriously like the only 2017 book I've even read, but it's SO GOOD, guys!

Comments always make me smile. :) Seriously. Even if you comment on the post weeks or months later, it makes my day! So don't hesitate to leave your thoughts even if it's been a long time since the post was published. I'll try to reply to you, especially if you ask a question, but sometimes life happens. But I do read and appreciate every single one of them because I know how hard it can be to find the time or energy to comment. So a heartfelt THANK YOU for brightening my day when you do. <3
